Simon Arrol, Director Technical of Marina India, was recently an invited speaker at the Boat India 08 conference. This was held in Cochin to coincide with the re-start of The Volvo Ocean Race after its ten day stopover. The title of the presentation, which was the first of the conference, was “Marinas are Fundamental”. The title says it all. India is a country of one billion people but has not one marina.
The yachting sector will not and cannot develop to any significant extent unless marinas are built, thus giving boaters somewhere to berth their yachts. Simon called on governments to welcome private sector investment in marinas and to act as enablers in terms of leasing land and water and expediting the planning process.
